Discover why a safari is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at photography.
Photography is a popular hobby. Have you ever wondered if it might be something for you? But how do you find out? A course in a community hall? Tutorial videos on a Sunday evening from the comfort of your sofa? There are more beautiful ways.
Our suggestion: Nine days of intensive wildlife photography in the South African bush. Does that sound like a lot for a first attempt? That’s exactly the point. Wildlife photography has a decisive advantage: the experience itself is breathtaking – with or without a camera. If you realise along the way that photography isn’t for you, you can simply put the camera aside and enjoy the play of the elephants at the waterhole. Unlike landscape photography, on safari it’s not just the light that changes. Every day holds new encounters with the fascinating African wildlife.
“But won’t I hold the others back?” With us, the answer is clear: No, you won’t. Our groups are small, and our team of photo experts supports everyone at their own level: while some refine their image composition, we calmly review the basics with you – settings, light, the right moment. And sometime during those days, it happens: the moment when your first truly successful image appears on your display. Priceless.
And what about equipment? You don’t necessarily need your own camera. Perhaps someone among your family or friends can lend you one for the occasion. Or you can rent a set. Many specialist shops offer excellent advice for this. Either way, it’s worth holding the camera in your hand two or three weeks before departure and practising at the zoo, in a park, or at the bird feeder on your balcony. (This also applies to your own camera if you rarely use it.) This way, you’ll spend your first lion sighting watching the lions instead of fumbling through the camera menu.
