Technique · Light · Timing for Powerful Wildlife Photos

Wildlife photography from an open safari vehicle presents different challenges than any other genre. Here you will learn what matters – from stabilisation to the precise moment of release.

Photographing from the Vehicle

Wildlife photography on safari takes place almost exclusively from a standing position in the vehicle. This is not a disadvantage; it is a unique characteristic that you must understand and utilise. The open vehicle has no windows, no doors between you and the animal. You shoot freely, in all directions. Your composition and reaction time depend on how well you have prepared for this situation.

 

Stabilisation: A tripod is impractical and too slow in a vehicle. A monopod is conceivable, but we recommend a beanbag: it dampens vibrations, adapts to any surface, and can be positioned in seconds. We can provide the filling on site upon request.

 

Camera Settings: Animals move, people move (shifting the vehicle), leaves flutter in the wind causing fluctuating light – often all at once. Your settings must be correct before the animal lifts its head. Exposure, autofocus mode, and approximate framing are prepared during waiting periods, not in the heat of the action. > The Right Timing​

Dust: In the private nature reserves, there are no tarmac roads. Sand tracks mean dust. Your camera and lenses need appropriate protection. Rain is also always a possibility. > What do I need besides my camera and toothbrush?​

Seating Position: All photographers sit on the left side of the vehicle. As South Africa drives on the left, the passenger seat is on the left, followed by three rows of safari seating. This ensures everyone has a clear view and freedom of movement for their photography. > Why is group size decisive? The experts sit on the driver’s side, allowing them to offer assistance or glance at a camera display. Each of these seats has its advantages. We rotate seats after every game drive so that every photographer benefits from all perspectives. From five photographers onwards, we split into two vehicles, each accompanied by an expert.

Light is never a secondary concern in wildlife photography. In the African bush, it is extraordinary at certain times of the day.

 

Golden Light: The hours shortly after sunrise and before sunset provide warm, side-lit, soft light. This so-called golden light models fur, feathers, and texture in a way that midday light never can. It offers contrast without harshness, depth without hard shadows. No filter or post-processing can replace it. Alongside increased animal activity, this is the primary reason our game drives take place at these times. > What does a safari feel like?

 

Midday Light: Harsh, vertical light creates deep shadows under eyes, ears, and body contours. However, scenes involving water, play of shadows, or silhouettes can still yield strong images in this light. During lodge time between drives, the camera is still worth using: for birds, reptiles, and details of plants.

 

Cloud Cover: An overcast sky diffuses light evenly. Contrasts become softer, colours more saturated. This is often more advantageous for animal portraits than direct sunlight.

 

Rain: Showers are possible in the South African summer (October to April). With appropriate preparation, dramatic and atmospheric images can be achieved.

 

Backlight: Positioning an animal against the rising or setting sun creates powerful silhouettes. This requires a conscious decision in your camera settings regarding what you wish to show.

Animals in Motion

A sleeping lion is relatively simple: time to find the correct settings and experiment. A massive kudu bull in motion is a different task. And a colourful lilac-breasted roller in flight is a masterpiece. Wildlife photography in motion is technically demanding but learnable if you understand how to make your camera do what you intend.

 

Shutter Speed: Freezing motion requires fast shutter speeds. As a guideline:

  • From 1/1000 sec for large, slowly moving animals.

  • From 1/2000 sec for faster movements.

  • From 1/3000 sec for freezing flight.

 

In low light (heavy cloud, early morning, or late evening), you must open the aperture or increase the ISO to achieve these speeds. Modern image noise at high ISO is generally more acceptable than motion blur. Autofocus Mode: Always use continuous autofocus for moving subjects (this function has different names depending on the manufacturer: AF-C, AI Servo, or simply "continuous"). Track the animal, hold the focus, and follow. Many current mirrorless models also feature subject and eye detection. It is worth knowing and activating this function

Burst Mode: Use burst mode for rapid movements. This means many images – and significant storage requirements. To ensure the camera’s capacity is not limited by the memory card’s speed, it is worth paying attention to card speed when purchasing. > What do I need besides my camera and toothbrush?

 

Panning: For parallel movement, e.g., an animal running past the vehicle, it can be worthwhile to swing the camera with the subject (panning). The animal remains sharp while the background blurs, conveying speed. This requires much practice, and the number of discarded images is high. However, when successful, the results are often exciting, dynamic images that fascinate the viewer.

Anticipation: The most powerful tool is not the camera, but observation. Those who read an animal’s behaviour know a second earlier what will happen next. > Learning to read and anticipate behaviour

The Right Timing

In wildlife photography, there is one moment that renders everything else irrelevant: the precise moment of release. Too early – nothing has happened yet. Too late – the moment has passed. Exactly in between lies the image.

Timing is not luck. It is the result of attention, preparation, and understanding of the animal.

 

Preparation before the action: Most of the time on safari, nothing happens, or nothing truly exciting occurs. After capturing a moment for documentation, the waiting time is used to set your camera correctly, assess the background, and roughly prepare your framing. This ensures everything is ready when the animal lifts its head. > Why is patience so crucial?​

Reading body language: Animals signal movement. A lion lifting its head and pricking its ears will soon stand up. A bird straightening on a branch and perhaps dropping waste ;) is about to fly. Those who know these signals are ready to press the shutter at the perfect moment. > Learning to read and anticipate behaviour

 

Eyes: The sharpest detail in any animal portrait is the eyes. Focus on the eyes, eyes in the light, eyes open: these three factors combined create a working image. If one is missing, it is rarely salvageable.

 

Ears: A frequently overlooked detail. The position of the ears can significantly influence the image’s impact. Observe: Are the ears symmetrical? Are they "looking" at you? Does their position aid the animal’s expression?

Pre-capture: Newer mirrorless models offer a pre-capture function. The camera begins buffering when you half-press the shutter, saving images from the moment before the actual release. For fast, unpredictable movements – e.g., a bird of prey taking flight, a leopard leaping – this can mean the difference between capturing the image and missing the moment. If your camera has this function, you should know and activate it.

 

Less is more: Not every sighting needs to produce a hundred shots. Those who select consciously – and wait until a situation is truly strong – reduce the time spent reviewing and selecting images later. From experience, we can assure you: the more practiced you are with your camera and subjects, the more targeted your releases will be. > Why is "less often more" for great photos?

 

Post-processing as part of timing: A well-exposed image captured at the right moment requires less post-processing. While a technically poor image of a perfect moment can often be salvaged on the computer, a technically perfect image of the wrong moment cannot.
